A back to work Mystery (update: 1910/12 Gregoire 70/4)

An intriguing shot sent to us by Jaap 'Bugatti' Horst. Not often we see period photos of cars in tatty condition. Or do the home made front wings have a special purpose except for hiding the radiator for us? From what we see of the bonnet we think it may be a round radiator; French car? Is the driver/mechanic a military chauffeur perhaps?

My grandfather bought a Berliet car in about 1911. He was an early radiographer and lent it to the Red Cross radiographic unit in Italy in WWI. I think it is a model 70. How do I send a stereo photo he took?

I must admit that I was wrong. Grégoire indeed. They used this type of mudguard, but still they have been deformed ...

I guess we see a circa 1912 Delahaye. Only the double amount of wheel bolts is not usual for Delahaye and is seen only sometimes on heavier vehicles. This mudguard shape was popular during some time before WW1, but the front part is normally horizontal. The present state suggests an external cause. In my eyes more changes have been made after the delivery of the car, the person responsible for this probably standing in front of it.

I think the leather on the wings is to stop the mud and stones damaging the car and driver

Editor: we were not referring the leather insets but to the odd shape of the metal part
