Recipient of a most impressive collection of prestigious concours awards, New Phantom chassis number '3CL' is pictured in Lawrence Dalton's Rolls-Royce The Derby Phantoms (Page 74). '3CL' was originally shown on Hooper's stand at the 1928 Olympia Motor Show before delivery to its first owner, Constance Duchess of Westminster (Lady Mary Grosvenor) and registration as 'YX 5555'. Special features included all fixtures in silver plate; Hooper Patent Passing Window; interior fitments in ivory; interior woodwork in Macassar ebony; lizard skin upholstery to the front compartment (replaced during restoration with black leather); and West of England Cloth to the rear.

On 4th September 1928, '3CL' began its outstanding concours career by winning the Premier Award Concours d'Elegance at Biarritz. The Rolls-Royce was then displayed outside the King of Italy's Palace in 1929, with a known and continuous history through to the present day.

On 10th September 1937 the Phantom was acquired by Sir A J Gill, passing to one Russel Edward Winn on 13th January 1958. In January 1986 the car was acquired by acknowledged New Phantom expert Colin Laybourn and a full body-off restoration undertaken through 1986 and into 1987. This rebuild was carried out to the highest standard, as evidenced by '3CL' winning 1st Prize in the Phantom I Class at the 1987 R-REC National Rally together with the Hooper Coachbuilders Trophy and 'Most Elegant in Class' Award.

This wonderful concours result was followed by a 2nd place in the Masters' Class at the R-REC National Rally in 1988 and a clean sweep of awards at the R-REC National Rally in 1990: 1st Prize in Phantom 1 Class; 'Best in Show' Trophy; Hooper Coachbuilders Trophy; and 'Most Elegant in Class' Award. That same year '3CL' also won 1st prize in the R-REC Ghost Club's Hartwell House concours. Two more concours 'firsts' were awarded at the R-REC National Rally: Masters Class (1991) and Phantom I Class (1993) together with the 'Most Elegant in Show' award in 1993.

In December 1999 '3CL' was purchased from Messrs P & A Wood by Nigel Myers and continued its R-REC concours campaign with it new owner (see file). Next owner Geoffrey Taylor acquired the car on 5th April 2007 from P & A Wood, who carried out an engine rebuild in January 2008 at a cost of £83,985. Our vendor acquired the car from P & A Wood on 9th July 2009. In September 2009 the Phantom was displayed at the first Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Concours at Goodwood, receiving a 'Highly Commended' award. Described by our vendor as in excellent overall condition, this celebrated Rolls-Royce Phantom is ready to resume its illustrious concours career with the fortunate next owner.
