Ex- Andrew Bremner collection; sporting vintage special built up from a rolling chassis in 2014; runs and drives

Few French motor manufacturers can match the engineering pedigree of Hotchkiss. Founded in 1875 as the Paris branch of the American Hotchkiss munitions company, the firm built its first motor car in 1903.

Introduced in 1926, the AM2 featured a smooth and dependable 2.4-litre overhead-valve four-cylinder engine, driving through a four-speed manual gearbox. With four-wheel drum brakes and semi-elliptic leaf spring suspension, it was an advanced and highly capable touring car for its day. Renowned for its durability, the AM2 could comfortably cruise at around 60mph and was capable of a top speed approaching 70mph.

This unique AM2 Sports Special began its modern life as a rolling chassis, purchased by Andrew Bremner in 2014 after several years of negotiation with its previous owner in rural Wales. The vision was to create a sporting vintage special inspired by the coachbuilt machines of the period, with the design developed by Mr Bremner and his son's brother-in-law, an experienced restorer of high-quality British vintage cars.

Constructed around a traditional ash frame by local craftsmen, the elegant bodywork, bonnet, petrol tank, seating and handsome mahogany dashboard were all hand-built from scratch. Mechanical components were painstakingly sourced, rebuilt and returned to service where possible. Following an initial engine start that highlighted the need for further fettling, the engine was removed, comprehensively rebuilt and refitted, resulting in the running and driving Sports Special that was enjoyed and then sold at a Brightwells auction in 2018.

The car has been enjoyed locally by the current owner since and is now being offered for sale again

Accompanying the car is an extensive history file documenting both its earlier ownership and its remarkable transformation. Included are an original French parts catalogue, photocopied workshop manuals, correspondence, restoration records and details of parts sourced throughout the build, providing a fascinating insight into the care and craftsmanship invested in the project.
