Chassis Number: 29035
Registration Number: BF9202
The present owner began building the A-A in 1965. He had enjoyed driving his first real car, a 1929 12/50 Alvis Betleback and when he acquired a 1930 Standard Avon, he found that it handled well, being much lighter to drive than the Alvis, and he decided to produce a combination of the two for VSCC racing. [The present engine is from 1927 with a "crash" 4 speed gearbox. A pre-selector gearbox was fitted briefly and facilities for a replacement are included].
The result was originally fitted with a single-seat body resembling a Maserati as raced at Brooklands. Racing began in 1969 and continued to 1974, mainly handicap races, in one; fastest lap was gained after lapping most of the field. When career pressure had to dominate, he terminated competition in 1974 to concentrate on music.
In 2000 he began rebuilding the body as it would have been in 1930. This took two years. More racing and hill climbs took place and in 2017 after mild successes he came 2nd at Oulton Park, being overtaken from the lead 1.8 seconds from the flag. Seeking more power, a Phoenix crankshaft and rods were fitted, also lighter push rods and chain driven 20/60 camshaft. The engine will rev safely to 5500 rpm with 55 lb oil pressure. Recently, a VSCC approved Wade Supercharger has been fitted, with noticeable improvement in acceleration.
The road-going weight is 14 cwt or 880 Kg. The A-A has been much admired in both road-going and racing form. It has never been involved in any kind of accident. Additionally, there are five 19" Blockley tyres, five road-going dunlops, all balanced. Cooling is by electric fan and mechanical water pump with 50% Glycol. Brakes are hydraulically operated with "TYPECAST" drums.
The passenger seat will accommodate a six foot person. The driver is limited to 5' 7"-8" currently. There is a large file of the car's history and the Alvis Hare Mascot is a nice touch. The car has only ever been driven by the owner who is now approaching his 90th year. Unfortunately, impaired health has led to a loss of a competition licence necessitating this sale.
This car is great value when compared to similar supercharged Alfa & Bugatti models from the period & is eligible for numerous vintage racing events where in the past it has aquitted itself very well.
