1939 Incredible MG TA

Is this TA Barn find UNIQUE in the MG World? UNUSED SINCE 1950, 2 owners , 32,286 miles from new , FACTORY PAINT, and running!

Yes, an incredible find. The definition of the 'oily rag' car, needing only an engine refresh, and leave the rest alone!

If you are interested in originality, or have always longed for an untouched factory car, then you need to book an appointment to view this amazing time-warp! It has that 'factory magic' that can never be recaptured even in the finest restoration. Although it is a 'runner' , I would just give the engine a revamp, then drive it, and drive it, leaving the rest of its virginity alone.

Puchased new in May 1939 by James Hamilton of Rothwell, Lanarkshire, and whom had covered just 6320 miles when the car was laid up in 1941. Mr. Hamilton may well have answered the 'Second World War 'call-up' for the car was not used again until January 1946. This is all evidenced by the saving of the ORIGINAL buff logbook issued to Mr. Hamilton with the car, and the original tax discs. The TA was then used for just 4 years, the final road tax being issued at the end of Dec. 1950 when the car had covered 32,000 miles.

The car was then laid up by Mr. Hamilton for 33 years until purchased in 1984 by Mr. James Bowman of Glasgow, who (luckily?) never found the time to restore it or even use it. Perhaps that was a blessing in disguise or the virginity would have been lost. It remained in Mr. Bowman's garage for a further 38 years! until the current custodian purchased it in 2022. He cherished the untouched quality of the TA and has undertaken only the necessary and required steps to make it usuable and safe on the road..........brakes fully overhauled, new Blockley tyres, rebuilt bronze fuel pump, new fuel and water hoses, new fan belt and tank & fuel system cleaned throughout. The car now stops well and evenly; the engine runs smoothly at 65psi, but the 'puff' has gone, so the car would benefit from just an engine refreshment to give it a new life. All else works perfectly and should be left.

Moving to the bodywork, this is quite incredible. Still in the original factory Carmine red paintwork , the body is as solid as a rock, with perfect wings, accurate door 'shuts', exact bonnet to body line, and incredibly well preserved chrome on the original radiator shell, original head & sidelamps and windscreen; the latter still sporting the genuine TA ((working) wiper motor and original wiper system, and the factory fitted Lucas type '160' rear view mirror.

All the guages, switches, knobs, cables, dash lamp, 30mph.-lamp, main/reserve fuel system, and bronze carburettors are as fitted by the factory, together with the automatic chassis lubrication system. (The original large air cleaner is with the car.)

Moving to the interior, the original factory red leather seats are near perfect, all door panels show little wear, but the original carpets have suffered and need replacing. The roof and roof frame are still servicable but there is no evidence the car ever received a tonneau cover as no pegs or holes exist.

Needless to say it is a totally all-matching NOs. car complete with full tool kit, (the ORIGINAL batteries, now replaced of course), Altette horn, FT 27 foglamp, plus important notes from Mr. Bowman's daughter, the original tax discs, original factory manual, the first issued registration book with single owner, the first V5 in name of first owner and the new V5c in the current owner's name, complete the history from new. PHEW! What more could you want.

It will be a special man that buys this; one who will use it, understand its hstorical value and preserve the authenticity for younger enthusiasts to appreciate the personal craftsmanship that went into the building of pre-war vehicles.

While surely it must be somewhere around the £20,000 mark, for such a historic and running car; you'll agree the buyer becomes more important in this case.

Please phone for an appointment to view.
