A couple of weeks ago we showed you the penny farthing bike race at one of the oldest cycle tracks in the world, Herne Hill Velodrome in South London. Not much later we came across this black and white film (turn on the sound for more background information – English spoken). “The Finsbury Park Cycling Club celebrates their 70th anniversary by dressing up in Victorian costume and riding vintage bicycles from Hatfield to High Barnet.”
Founded in 1883, the cycling club is known as ‘The Park’ in the North London cycling community and is still active. The footage shown here was shot in 1953 – which means we see a wide variety of historic bikes as well as the more ‘modern’ road traffic.
Bicycle experts, can you tell us more about the two- and three- wheelers we see here?
The Rotary tricycle - at the beginning of the film - one big wheel on one side, on the other side two small wheels... ca 1880.
The Marriott Cooper Olympia tricycle - two persons tricycle, reat persons is steering... ca 1890.
The Bantam crypto - the small penny farthing, with gearing in front hub - ca 1890.
Some other tricycles (so called Cripper), some penny farthings, a pedersen bike (with the hammock saddle), a 1870er Velocipede (boneshaker)...
