100th Anniversary of Bernd Rosemeyer’s Birth (UPDATE II: other books)

Tomorrow, October 14th, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary racing driver Bernd Rosemeyer. He started his career in motorbike races, but after a brief stint with NSU and DKW, he became part of the Audi racing team in October 1934. Following his debut in the Auto Union Silver Arrow in the 1935 AVUS Race, he quickly attracted attention and won his first Grand prix on September 25, 1935 in Brno. After that many triumphs followed and his status rose to that of a superstar. His last victory was in the Grand Prix of Donington on October 2, 1937. That same month Bernd Rosemeyer set several world records with the Auto Union Streamliner on the Frankfurt to Darmstadt autobahn. In January 1938 Auto Union had a modified Streamliner ready for another record attempt. During the run, Rosemeyer's car was caught by a gust of wind at a speed of almost 440 km/h. The Streamliner skidded out of control and the ensuing accident cost him his life. (photos courtesy Audi AG)

Update I by Harry Schley: "For those who are interested in Bernd Rosemeyer, they should read the book by his Wife Elly Rosemeyer Beinhorn: "Mein Mann der Rennfahrer". It's a wonderful book about the history of the International Races in the 30's. The book is from 1938."
