In 1940, Carrozzeria Touring of Milan built three exceptionally lightweight open racing cars for Alfa Romeo. Known as the ‘Torpedino tipo Brescia’, they were based on the highly developed Tipo 256 competition version of the legendary Alfa Romeo 6C 2500.
The secret behind their elegant, lightweight bodies was Touring’s famous Superleggera construction method – Italian for ‘super light’. A delicate framework of small-diameter steel tubes defined the shape of the body, over which thin, hand-formed aluminium panels were fitted. The framework itself was not the car’s main load-bearing structure, but provided shape and support for the lightweight aluminium skin.
This ingenious technique gave Touring’s designers extraordinary freedom to create flowing curves and aerodynamic forms while keeping weight to an absolute minimum – a crucial advantage in both road and racing cars.
The complete framework displayed here weighs an astonishing 21.8 kg!
A car body reduced to its very essence: engineering, craftsmanship and automotive art in perfect harmony.
Originally designed to disappear beneath aluminium bodywork, this powder-coated framework is now ready to take centre stage – as a striking sculpture for a garden, garage or private collection, or as the starting point for a new coachbuilding project.
