Borrowing the descriptive style of the copywriters of the period, this exquisite machine is the absolute epitome of bicycle refinement. Actually, it’s not easy to find sufficient superlative words to describe it, and photos don’t really do it justice. The standard of engineering and the incredible quality of its finish is first class.
The Singer and Premier Cycle Companies merged in 1919, and you can see that though it is badged as a Singer, it has Premier pattern mudguards. The 1926 Singer catalogue states: ‘This is the revival of a special model which enjoyed a world wide reputation in pre-war days. Many Singer specialised details are embodied, the equipment is full and comprehensive, finish is in chocolate colour tastefully lined out in double panel fine burnished gold lining, and the bicycle is undoubtedly the last word in high grade production.’
The brightwork was re-nickeled by the previous owner. As it was done some decades ago, I’m not sure if the box lining and transfers are original or re-applied, nor if the paint has been touched up in places. This wonderful machine is in lovely preserved condition, with many unique original Singer features and accessories – including the Premier mudguards, described as ‘three flat section’ – and it is an absolute pleasure to ride.
